Americus (May 17, 2014)  -- On a picturesque day in South Georgia, more than 300 women came out to attend Phoebe Sumter's Annual Women's Health Conference today at the Student Success Center on the campus of Georgia Southwestern State University.

This year’s theme was “Stroke Is No Joke”, which stressed the seriousness of the fact that more than 795,000 people have strokes each year, and that stroke is the 4th leading cause of death in Georgia.

Participants were offered a number of health screenings, such as blood pressure, BMI and glucose and cholesterol in addition to diabetes, and there were more than 16 vendors on hand as well.  A formal welcome was done by Dr. Doug Patten, CEO, Phoebe Sumter Medical Center and immediately after the program begin.  After a Zumba session led by Krystle Hannibal, three physicians gave presentations: Kristin T. Collier, MD, General Surgery (Screenings Every Woman Should Have); Jose Rodriguez, MD, Cardiology (Heart Disease and Stroke) and Dale Lawson, MD, Emergency Medicine (Recognizing the Symptoms of Stroke).  In addition to another Zumba session, the crowd was entertained by Carla Hawkins of Albany.

"All of the physicians that spoke did an excellent job, and I think most of the participants left the event knowing more about strokes than they did before they came," said Johnson. "When it comes to stroke, the more information we know the better we are in terms of knowing the signs and how to respond.  Stroke is very prevalent in the Southeastern United States and is the 3rd leading cause of death in Georgia, so this conference was a perfect time to address this issue head on with the caregivers of most families.”

“Thanks to all of our physicians, hospital employees and people from the community who volunteered, and a special thanks to all of the women who showed up today,” said Johnson.  “It takes a team effort to have an event of this magnitude, and we look forward to the next event.
