ALBANY — The 2013 Lights of Love campaign soared past its goal of $50,000 to raise more than $70,000 to benefit the Phoebe Cancer Center according to a release from Phoebe.

The 2013 donations will be used to renovate the radiation oncology clinic waiting area, including new, comfortable seating more conducive to the needs of patients.

“The Phoebe Cancer Center is extremely grateful to the Junior Woman’s Club and Phoebe Foundation for their dedication to improving the quality of life for cancer patients in Southwest Georgia,” said Linda Van der Merwe, vice president of oncology services at Phoebe
Putney Memorial Hospital. “The waiting area has remained the same for more than 10 years, and we look forward to the changes that will make the space a more inviting place for those fighting cancer.”

A collaboration of the Junior Woman's Club of Albany and Phoebe Foundation, “Lights of Love” is an annual fundraiser that gives the community an opportunity to honor or remember their loved ones while giving a special gift to cancer patients and their families. The Lights of Love tree, located outside the main entrance of the hospital during the holidays, holds symbolic white lights representing those honored and remembered.

“Our relationship with the Phoebe Foundation is very strong,” said Bonnie Hardegree, president of the Junior Woman’s Club. “I am pleased with what we have been able to accomplish with this year’s campaign through our combined efforts, as well as the work of our tree lighter, Patsy Martin. We look forward to this relationship continuing in the future.”

The $70,000 total exceeded the highest total previously raised, which was $66,823 in 2004.
