Nancy Askey wins top volunteer award at Phoebe Putney Hospital

Albany, GA

The Albany Herald

ALBANY — Nancy Askey has been named the recipient of the 2013 Lillian B. Allison Volunteer of the Year Award for her many years of service at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital.

A former nurse on the cardiac floor at Phoebe, Askey has spent most of her life helping patients deal with cardiovascular diseases. After retiring, she became a part of the Mended Hearts Organization, a group which volunteers their time at the hospital to visit and encourage those who are preparing or recovering from cardiac procedures.

Askey was honored along with 675 additional volunteers for their nearly 70,000 hours of dedicated service to the hospital. The volunteers do everything from building ramps for those needing accessible homes in the community and sewing teddy bears for pediatric patients to working in family waiting rooms and helping out in various offices.

The hospital event was a western theme with cowboy hats, boots, barbeque and entertainment by the Kinchafoonee Cowboys.
