About Sean Sheff, MD

Sean Sheff, MD, is a general and minimally invasive surgeon who joined the Phoebe Physicians in 2011 and is a member of the medical staff at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center. He is also a member of Phoebe General Surgery of Americus and practices alongside Dr. Jeremy Joyner and Dr. Douglas Joyner.

Dr. Sheff earned a bachelor of science in biochemistry from the University of South Alabama in Mobile, Ala. He then went on to earn his medical degree from the University of South Alabama College of Medicine, and upon graduation he completed a five year General Surgeon Residency at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Georgia. He then went on to a Surgical Fellowship in minimally invasive and bariatric surgery at Gundersen Lutheran Hospitals in LaCrosse, Wisc. In his fellowship, Dr. Sheff spent an extra year learning to perfect laparoscopic and minimally invasive techniques, foremost among being bariatric surgical procedures.

Dr.Sheff is certified in both Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Advanced Trauma Life Support, and he is Board Certified in Surgery from the American Board of Surgery. He is an active member of both the Society of General and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. Dr. Sheff has presented and published numerous papers in both advanced laparoscopy and bariatric surgery. He has a passion for all aspects of laparoscopic surgery, which includes bariatric and weight loss surgery.
