Camp Good Grief and Journey

Gearing Up for Camp Good Grief

When we lose a loved one, we all grieve in different ways. The loss of a loved one can be particularly difficult for children and teens.

Each summer, Albany Community Hospice hosts its annual grief camps for children and teens. Camp Good Grief is for children fifth grade and below, and Journey is for youth/teens sixth-12th grades.

The camps allow children and teens to grow and grieve together. Camp participants engage in activities and small group sessions to help them learn about and discuss grief with their peers. Experienced, trained counselors, who are prepared to deal with bereavement issues, will assist campers throughout their time at the camps.

The children will participate in small group activities, such as crafts, group sessions and games to help children express their grief. A memorial service is also held at the conclusion of each camp day at 4:30 p.m.

Dates and Times:

  • Camp Good Grief (Grade K-2) June 19, 1-5 p.m.
  • Camp Good Grief (Grade 3-5) June 21, 1-5 p.m.
  • Camp Journey (Grade 6-12) June 26, 1-5 p.m.

There is no cost for participating. The camp is most beneficial to those children and teens who:

  • have lost a loved one in the last one to three years
  • have a realistic memory of the person who died
  • placed significant importance on the person who died

The camps are available to any child or teen in the community who has experienced the death of a loved one. For more information, or to receive an application, contact Cheryl Nance or Tim Olds at Albany Community Hospice by calling (229) 312-7050.

Lights of Love

Lights of Love

The 2012 Tree Lighting Ceremony will take place on Monday, Dec. 10, 2012 at 7 p.m. in the Wetherbee Lobby at Phoebe's main campus.

Each year since 1983, Christmas lights representing donations to Phoebe's cancer services have adorned the "Lights of Love" Christmas tree in front of the hospital. Proceeds from the Junior Woman's Club of Albany's holiday project provide special services for patients and families dealing with the devastating effects of cancer. However, Lights of Love is more than a holiday event, it is a year-round project, and your gifts are welcome at any time.

You can help brighten the lives of those battling a disease that strikes two out of three families. For a suggested contribution of $25.00 or more, a symbolic light in honor or in memory of your special someone will adorn the tree. Your gift will be acknowledged and you will receive an invitation to attend the festive Lights of Love tree lighting ceremony in December. Each year, a cancer survivor is chosen to throw the switch at the ceremonial lighting of the tree, signifying hope for all cancer patients.

For more information about Lights of Love, visit the Lights of Love web page.
